( 5) Cactuar Needle | |||||
Found exclusively in arid regions, cactuars are known for their ability to survive extended periods under the scorching sun on naught but the moisture stored within their bodies. Conditioned by the brutal nature of their surroundings, cactuars are quick to defend themselves, launching a barrage of needle-like projectiles at potential predators—and the occasional unwary traveler.[1] |

Cactuar is the English name of the enemy which in Japanese is Sabotender; a combination of the words Saboten(Cactus) and Pretender. |
Raimdelle Codex

"This fleshy hunter pricketh and transfixeth a thousandfold all that nigheth him by the length of a jousting lance. Unneth they are found in holts and caves for they may not without sun and heat be long kept without corruption. Their utter parts are askew and aslant and therefore they go never forthright, but always sidewise." |

Notes
|
---|
Cactuar first appeared in Final Fantasy VI(SNES) as "Cactrots" in the original English translation. Cactuar have been known to use attacks such as "1000 Needles!" and "10,000 Needles!" which would ignore defenses and be unblockable. The boss variations, known as Gigantuar or Jumbo Cactuar would use the attack "99,999 Needles!" in addition to the "10,000 Needles!" attack. During an article in V-Jump (15 Feb 1997) it was discussed that Cactuar was based on a doodle by Tetsuya Nomura which was drawn on a notebook when he was still a student in high school. |
