The world of Hydaelyn is home to a plethora of races and civilizations. Each culture seems to have a very different idea of what is "divine."

A pantheon of deities revered by the majority of Eorzea's populace, they are said to have ruled the continent and its surrounding islands until the arrival of wandering tribes. Impressed by the resilience of the primitive settlers, each of the Twelve mercifully saw fit to ensure their welfare.
Little is known about the Twelve beyond mythology; indeed, aside from a failed attempt to summon them during the Calamity of the Seventh Umbral Era, there is little evidence of their power or influence. The appearance of the Archons, thought by many to be the representatives, or worldly incarnations, of the Twelve lends some credence to the legends.

Among Eorzea's many races are tribes of beastmen, each of which revere an ancient deity that rules over the element most dominant in their homeland. For example, the Sahagin, who dwell on the floors of the Indigo Deep, revere Leviathan, primal of water, whereas the Amalj'aa, who live in the barren deserts of Thanalan, worship Ifrit, Lord of the Inferno. These old gods are known collectively as the Primals.
In 1562 of the Sixth Astral Era, beings known as Paragons, thought by the beastmen to be representatives of their gods, began to teach these tribes to summon these deities physical forms using the power of aether to sustain them, though at a great cost to the planet's life force.
Hydaelyn's very consciousness seems to have taken form as the Mother Crystal. Little is known about this Gaia-like deity, but it may very well be responsible for The Echo.
