Fishing ⇒ Collectable Fish

152321.png
You have learned Collect─a special Disciple of the Land action that is used to gather an item as a collectable.
152322.png
While fishing under the effect of the Collector's Glove status, fish landed will be gathered as collectables, their size directly affecting collectability.

Fishing ⇒ Fish Population

152061.png
You have thinned the population of fish in this area enough to lure forth a rare species which normally remains hidden. There are several types of these timid wavekin in waters, sands, and skies across Eorzea.
152062.png
These rare fish, however, will not remain in the area for long, so once you have detected one, focus all your efforts on not letting him be the “one that got away.”

Fishing ⇒ Fish Population (Spearfishing)

152901.png
Thinning the population of certain fish will eventually lure forth rare species, and also grant you the effect of Spearfisher's Intuition.
152902.png
These rare fish, however, will not remain in the area for long, so once you have detected one, focus all your efforts on not letting him be the “one that got away.”

Fishing ⇒ Fish Size

151291.png
The higher your perception rating, the better chance you have of landing a large-sized fish. Depending on the variety, it may be usable for mooching.

Fishing ⇒ Fish and Weather

152071.png
You have caught an elusive fish that will only appear when one specific weather type follows another! There are several types of these fickle creatures in waters, sands, and skies across Eorzea, so keep an eye out for meteorological changes while casting your line.

Fishing ⇒ Fishing

151311.png
After using the Cast action to cast your line into the water, you need simply sit back and wait for a bite. When a fish bites, you will not only see the line being tugged, but hear it. While a fish is on the line, use the Hook action to attempt to reel in your catch.
151312.png
Your chances of successfully reeling in a fish after hooking it are directly affected by the fish type and your gathering rating.

Fishing ⇒ Fishing Holes

151301.png
Scattered about Eorzea there are legendary fishing holes that only a handful of fishers can recognize amongst the normal waters. Once you have learned Gulleye, perhaps you, too, can try your luck at these prime fishing locations.

Fishing ⇒ Fishing Log

151251.png
Your fishing log contains invaluable information on everything from fishing hole locations, to detailed fish data, to personal records. The log can be found under Logs in your main menu.

Fishing ⇒ Fishing and Regional Folklore

152791.png
There exist certain fishing holes that are hidden in plain sight, and can only be found after reading the detailed descriptions found in tomes of regional folklore.
152792.png
You can discern which fish can be found in these elusive fishing holes by viewing your fishing log.

Fishing ⇒ How to Gig

152541.png
When bubbles appear within the teeming waters, it means a fish has approached. Use the Gig command at this time to spear the creature and add it to your inventory.
152542.png
There are several types of gig heads each specialized for catching different kinds of fish. If it looks like you are not having luck with your current head, change it! All gigs come complete with a set of interchangeable heads.

Fishing ⇒ Mooching

151271.png
Mooching is a technique that involves catching a smaller fish, and then leaving that fish on the line to lure in a larger fish. Mooching can only be attempted after catching a large-sized fish that is also suitable for mooching.
151272.png
There are some varieties of fish that can only be landed via mooching. Increase your perception rating to increase your chances of landing a massive catch, and then use that fish to lure in an even rarer find.

Fishing ⇒ Ocean Fishing

Fishing ⇒ Patience

152831.png
When fishing for the choicest of fish, Patience can significantly increase the quality of your next catch. However, your chances of reeling in said catch are diminished.
152832.png
While under the effect of Patience, there are two actions you can use to negate your reduced chance of catching fish─Powerful Hookset and Precision Hookset.

These actions are best suited to different types of fish, so you will need to watch your line carefully to determine which to use.

Fishing ⇒ Readying Your Line

151241.png
To fish, you must first change your class to fisher by equipping a rod in your main hand.
151242.png
If the body of water you are near is fishable, the icon for the Cast action will glow. Determine a bait to apply to your line by selecting the Bait action and then checkmarking the desired item from the list that appears.
151243.png
Some bait can only be used in certain locations or for landing certain types of fish. Bait and tackle can be harvested, made by Disciples of the Hand, or purchased from various merchants or fieldcraft vendors. Always make sure your inventory is stocked before heading out into the wild.

Fishing ⇒ Releasing Fish

151941.png
Every good fisher knows even Nophica's bounty is not limitless, and will therefore return to the water any unwanted catches so that the Matron may take them to Her bosom once more. This is called releasing, and the action is available to all fishers. Released fish will not be added to your inventory, preserving area populations.
151942.png
Once you have released a certain type of fish, you will continue to release that fish should you catch it again in the same location. If you wish to stop releasing fish, you must first end your fishing session and cast your line anew.

Fishing ⇒ Skyfishing & Dunefishing

151281.png
No water, no problem! In Eorzea, experienced fishers find casting their lines into deserts (dunefishing) and off mountain cliffs (skyfishing) just as rewarding as casting them into a lake or river.
151282.png
Once you have learned the traits that unlock these special techniques, you will next need to equip your tackle box with special sky- and dunefishing bait.

Fishing ⇒ Spearfishing

152521.png
You are now able to spearfish! However, to access this new feature, you must first equip a gig in your off hand. If you do not already have one, gigs can be purchased from fieldcraft vendors or other shops that sell bait and tackle.

Fishing ⇒ Spearfishing Interface

152891.png
Your objective when spearfishing is to strike fish with a gig as they pass through teeming waters.

As they swim across your field of vision, you must strike them in their weak spot, its size increasing according to your gathering rating.

152892.png
Nearby fish will take notice of your actions in the teeming waters, their wariness represented by a gauge at the top of the spearfishing interface.

It increases slowly over time, as well as with each strike with your spear. When the gauge is full, the fish will disperse, ending your spearfishing attempt.

152893.png
Successfully catching fish in quick succession will increase your catch counter, which slows the rate at which wariness increases.

Fishing ⇒ Swimming Shadows

152801.png
Extensive spearfishing is said to, on occasion, upset the balance of the ecosystem in a given area. In fact, it has been known to draw more rare and elusive varieties of fish, often found hiding in swimming shadows.
152802.png
Should you suspect such murky waters are close by, you can determine their exact location using Truth of Oceans.

Fishing ⇒ Teeming Waters

152531.png
Teeming waters are home to many different kinds of elusive creatures. It is at these locations that you can use your gig to land catches that normally ignore a fisher's line.
152532.png
The Shark Eye can be used to identify the location of nearby teeming waters and display them on your minimap.
152533.png
Target the teeming waters and press confirm to begin spearfishing.

Fishing ⇒ Using Lures

151261.png
In addition to bait, there exist several types of man-made lures. Lures are applied to your line in the same manner as bait.

Fish can sense the difference between live bait and lures; therefore it may take longer for you to register a bite.

151262.png
On the other hand, lures can be reused multiple times, as well as employed to land prey too large for smaller bait. Being able to choose the right bait or lure for the situation is what separates the amateur from the professional.
