Desynthesis allows you to recover materials, demimateria and crystals from many items. This goes for almost all weapons, tools, armor, accessories and furniture, wether they are crafted, bought, traded or obtained from dungeons, with the exception of certain items (such as relic weapons, or items that can be reduced into aethersand.) Potions and meals are generally not desynthable, although there are a few exceptions, and all but a few fish are also desynthable. Items whose item level exceeds the maximum desynth skill level cannot be desynthed at this time, but this might change after a future patch or expansion release.
Items that can be desynthed have their optimal desynthesis level and crafting class listed on the item. For crafted items, this desynthesis level is based on the recipe level, whereas for dungeon loot, fish, etc., it's based on item level. (A few exceptions exist, but the item will list the proper desynthesis level.) If your desynthesis skill level is 10 higher than the optimal level, your success rate will be 70%. You will get a penalty to succesrate if your skill is lower, and a bonus when higher than the optimal level. If the successrate is 0%, you cannot attempt desynthesis, and you can obviously not exceed 100% successrate.
The exact formula for the success rate modifier varies, with the penalty being less harsh at lower levels, and significant at higher levels. For example, Heavensward and Stormblood tier desynths will have a penalty of -1.50% success per level below optimal, while being above the optimal level gives a bonus of (TBD)% per level.
A few ways exist to improve the success rate of desynth. (Note that HQ items do NOT give a bonus over NQ.)
- Each melded materia increases success rate by 7.5%, including overmelded materia. Materia tier does not matter.
- Aetherial 'pink' items increase success rate by 3.85% per bonus stat, similar to materia. (This number might be inaccurate on 'pink' loot from Diadem.)
- Careful Desynthesis is a buff found on two consumables. Each stack of the bonus grants +3.75% success rate.
- Bacon Broth : NQ grants CD+1, HQ grants CD+2. This is a meal that lasts 30 minutes (60 minutes maximum duration if two are consumed.)
- Tinker's Calm : NQ grants CD+3, HQ grants CD+4. This is a medicine that lasts 10 minutes.
All these bonuses stack, and stacking them (materia + CD+6) is highly recommended to overcome the large item level gaps that exist between the expansions.
