A retainer is an NPC with whom players can leave items. The retainer can act as item storage, with an inventory capacity of 150 items. It can also act as a personal bazaar, allowing players to sell those items to other players, even while logged out--up to ten stacks may be listed for sale at a time. It appears at game launch that only one retainer is available per playable character, but in the future, multiple retainers will be able to be hired.
While deployed in the Market Wards, your own retainers can be distinguished from others by its name being in purple instead of the blue color of other retainers.
Once you complete the story mission "Scions of the Seventh Dawn", you will be given the option to hire a retainer.
Hiring a Retainer
When hiring a retainer you are allowed to choose from every race and gender available in Character Creation. Each race and gender combination has pre-defined characters available, and will be shown to you in succession until you choose one to hire.
While each retainer has its own given name, you will assign a nickname of your choice to identify your retainer. The nickname you choose must be unique, on your server. See section below for possible retainers to hire.
Managing a Retainer
First, summon your retainer from a summoning bell in one of the cities, or in most parts of the Market Wards. You will have several options available.
- Exchange items with your retainer.
Use this to give your retainer items (including untradeable items), crystals, or gil, or to retrieve what has previously been given to him/her. This is just a storage option and will not automatically list anything for sale in a bazaar.
- View and manage the contents of your bazaar.
Use this to list/unlist/make offers to purchase items in your retainer's bazaar. You can also list items you wish to buy from players (but you must already possess one or more of the item to list it), and offer rewards for players to repair your damaged equipment.
- Release your retainer from service.
This will release the retainer from your service. Any items, crystals, or gil being held by the retainer will be lost.
- Dismiss your retainer for now.
This will make the retainer leave the current area and close the retainer management menu.
- Finish managing your retainer.
Close the retainer management menu. Only available in the Market Wards, this leaves your retainer deployed in the Ward to peddle or buy goods, or request repairs.
