A close relative of the korpokkur, the yukinko cover themselves with a pointed hat of grass stalks to protect themselves from the cold and the falling snow. Known as “wintering,” this behavior has been mimicked by Far Eastern gardeners as a means of sheltering their own vulnerable trees and shrubs from the elements.[1]
