Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Ul'dah Variation:

Blackburn: Might ye be here seekin' Minfilia?

Hermit of the Wood: Aye, welcome to the Waking Sands. An 'aven fer those who've chosen...or been chosen to walk the glorious Path of the Twelve.

Tataru: Ah, you must be the one the Antecedent spoke of.

Tataru: Lady Minfilia will want to hear more of your recent “awakening” at the Arrzaneth Ossuary.

Tataru: She awaits you in the Hall of the First Step.

Gridania Variation:

Blackburn: See ye've finally arrived.

Hermit of the Wood: Aye, welcome to the Waking Sands. An 'aven fer those who've chosen...or been chosen to walk the glorious Path of the Twelve.

Hermit of the Wood: When I found you knocked senseless in the Twelveswood, I knew something was different about you. It is why I let the good Lady Minfilia know of yer predicament.

Hermit of the Wood: Tell 'er all you've seen, whether you believe it yourself or not, and she'll set things as straight as she can.

Hermit of the Wood: Alright then, while it pains me to cut this 'eartfelt reunion short, I've pressing matters to sort out back in Gridania. The younglin's ain't so young anymore, if you catch me meanin'. Farewell, <Player Name>.

* * *

Minfilia: (Ul'dah: I am delighted to see you once again.) (Gridania: You must be the man of whom the hermit spoke.) As you may have heard, I have many questions.

Minfilia: Ah, but I seem to have forgotten my courtesies. (Ul'dah: Please forgive me.) (Gridania: We have not been properly introduced.) My name is Minfilia, acting Antecedent of the Path of the Twelve.

Minfilia: Your bemused expression tells me you have not heard of us...which is to be expected. Ours is an underground organization dedicated to the documentation and research of divine intervention...or “miracles,” if you wish. We have walkers in each of Eorzea's city-states who investigate and report such phenomena. (Ul'dah: Lady Tataru is one of many who serve as our eyes and ears.) (Gridania: The young hermit who directed you here is one of many who serve as our eyes and ears.)

Minfilia: I shall not bother to elaborate on precisely what I mean by “divine intervention,” for I believe you have already experienced the phenomenon yourself.

Minfilia: You have a rare and special gift, <Full Player Name>, and it is that gift that has led you here to us.

* * *

Tataru: (Ul'dah: You found another who you believe saw Niellefresne's last moments in the undercroft?)

Hermit of the Wood: (Gridania: I reckon I've found me another woken, Minfilia. The lad/lass collapsed during the celebration.)

Minfilia: After years of naught but rumors, the past several moons have seen the hill of reports on my desk grow into a veritable mountain. Why the sudden influx? And why now, of all times? Which of the Twelve is waking men anew? Which...if any at all?

Tataru: (Ul'dah: Who are you!? What are you doing here!? This meeting is private!)

Hermit of the Wood: (Gridania: How did you─ But you're supposed to be─ Oh...)

Minfilia: It seems you have a keen eye, my friend.

Minfilia: And it seems you have passed our test.

Minfilia: Yes, yes, you are wondering how what you just witnessed─a conversation between myself and (Ul'dah: Tataru─is even possible, considering the fact that one of the involved persons is not even present in the Hall.) (Gridania: the hermit of the wood─is even possible, considering the fact that one of the involved persons left the Waking Sands nearly a bell ago.) Well that, <Player Name>, is your gift.

Minfilia: And I shall go one step further by suggesting that this is not the first time you have had such an experience. Come now, it is not, is it? Oh, you need not withhold your secrets from me. Here, you are among friends, and I give you my solemn word that no harm shall befall you. However, it might still prove prudent to refrain from informing those not on the Path of your awakening. Very few will understand this gift, but many will seek to judge you for possessing it.

Minfilia: And what you possess is a rare talent which we have come to refer to as “the Echo.” We believe it is in some way connected to the strange phenomena which have been occurring in locations all about Eorzea.

Minfilia: Were you not witness to the skies turning dark and showering the land with a storm of stars? Some of our brothers believe those who partook in this celestial event were “touched” by the Twelve, and that that is how they came by their gift.

Minfilia: The Path is not only a place for study, but a refuge for those who have been touched in some way. We aim to uncover the meaning behind these unexplained events while offering protection and guidance to those who hear the Echo.

Minfilia: But that is not all. My fellow walkers and I share the firm belief that this power was given to us for a purpose. Why entrust man with a gift so extraordinary, after all, if not to have him use it?

Minfilia: And so we offer those who have been touched the means to use their power to better the world―to bring peace to Eorzea.

Minfilia: So, what say you, <Player Name>? Now that you have heard who we are, and what we are trying to accomplish, will you consider joining us?

Minfilia: Ah, I beg your pardon. It was not my intention to force you into making a decision without allowing you time to consider my words. You are free to explore the building and speak with the others gathered here. When you feel ready to answer my question, visit me again in the Hall of the First Step.

* * *

Minfilia: Welcome back, <Player Name>. I take from your presence that you have had sufficient time to consider my offer. What say you?

Minfilia: Very good. I pray together we can learn more of this gift...for though we have scoured the realm for nigh on ten years, I fear there is still little we understand.

Minfilia: Scores of men and women have passed through our doors looking to find answers, and scores have embarked on quests to do just that...but their efforts have gained us little...and many have not returned.

Minfilia: Of those few who have...not one is willing to speak of what he saw at the end of the Path. It is as if they all bore witness to a truth too terrible...or too shameful to be told.

Minfilia: There are those here who would have me use the Echo to delve into the past of the returned. Yet it would be wrong of me to use my gift to tear that truth from them against their will. Were I to condone such an act of violation, we would be no better than the monsters people think us already.

Minfilia: Ah, but enough talk of the knowledge we lack. Let me tell you of what we do know.

Minfilia: The Echo allows you to breach the wall of a person's soul, and hear the resonations of their past. You will be there in their memories, seeing things as they saw them. You may even interact with that which lies therein. However, the past is like a stone tablet. You cannot uncarve what is already written.

Minfilia: As an unexpected side-effect of the gift, it seems the ability to reach into the soul of another also allows some of us to understand their words without having to comprehend the sounds they utter. In short, the Echo has granted these fortunate souls mastery of every language existing on Hydaelyn.

Minfilia: Unfortunately, that is the sum of our understanding of this gift from the gods... Why, we are not even sure the gift is from the Twelve. It is certainly true that many of those who hear the Echo also claim to have witnessed starshowers, but who is to say that even the starshowers are sent by them?

Minfilia: It is a sad admission, but this very lack of knowledge accounts for much of the persecution faced by our walkers. The less that is known about something, the more it is distrusted by the masses. If we were to learn more of the Echo, perhaps we could educate people, and help them to realize that we mean them no harm... But until we have learned that which we must teach them, we can expect only hatred.

Tataru: Pardon my intrusion, Lady Minfilia, but has the adventurer made his/her decision?

Minfilia: Yes, he/she has, Tataru.

Tataru: Then please come this way, so I can add your name to our records.

* * *

Tataru: I do not believe we were properly introduced. My name is Tataru, and I have been charged with the keeping of our guild's annals. As you have pledged to follow the Path of the Twelve with us, I shall add your name to the List of Walkers.

Tataru: From this day forth, you need no longer wander the realm alone, <Full Player Name>. You are our sworn brother/sister, and we will not let you stray from the Path.

Tataru: Now, I assume Lady Minfilia has informed you of our mission, but given that such grand matters can be difficult to take in, I shall relate it to you once more...Wishing to bring peace to the lands of Eorzea, a higher power has favored a handful of men and women with a great gift known to the chosen as “the Echo.”

Tataru: But with great power comes great responsibility! We must prove to the gods that we are worthy of their favor by setting forth on dangerous quests into untamed lands, there to battle savage beasts! Given the peril in which we who walk the Path must therefore place ourselves, all are required to travel in pairs...preferably with a companion who best complements our own skills.

Tataru: And now, the time has come for you to choose, <Player Name>. Which type of companion would you feel most comfortable with at your side? Which type of companion will complement your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses?

Tataru: Very good. It just so happens someone of that profession awaits a companion of their own.

Tataru: Would you have me speak with them?

Tataru: Excellent. I shall inform Lady Minfilia of your choice right away. When she has made her decision, you will be notified on this linkpearl.

Tataru: Do take care not to misplace it.

Path of the Twelve linkpearl obtained.

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Tataru: Greetings, <Player Name>! I bear good tidings! Lady Minfilia has given her blessing to your choice of Path companion. Hurry to the Waking Sands, and I shall introduce you to one another.

Path Companion - Miqo'te Female[edit]

Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Tataru: Welcome back, Pathbound <Player Name>. Your companion should be arriving shortly.

???: Well, hello there. I would apologize, but you know what they say─good things come to those who wait. Better still, it does wonders for the appetite!

Tataru: Allow me to introduce you to <Full Player Name>─an adventurer, a lately woken walker of the Path, and your new companion.

???: Ah, it is my pleasure to meet you, <Player Name>...and I am sure that knowing you will be still more pleasurable.

* * *

???: My name? Why, that is a secret! A little mystery will help to keep things fresh. Oh, and you can call me anything you like─so long as it pleases you.

Path Companion (Miqo'te): Lady Tataru, be certain to mark that name in your books. In red, I think!

Path Companion (Miqo'te): And now that we've put the pleasantries to bed, I think it's high time we got to know each other a lot better. How about you show me what lies beneath?

Path Companion (Miqo'te): An adventurer? How fascinating. I simply must know more about you. Ah, but not here. It would be better if we went somewhere...more public. Now that we are companions, I want people to know that you are mine...

Path Companion (Miqo'te): Allow me a little time to make myself more presentable, and I shall meet you at the Quicksand. Meanwhile, you can decide which of your most intimate secrets you'd like to volunteer, and which you'd prefer me to squeeze out of you!

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Momodi: Are you waiting for someone? A handsome suitor, perhaps? Ohohoho! Then may I suggest our finest table? Which one is our finest, you ask? Why, all of them are!

Path Companion (Miqo'te): The starshower, the Echo, the Path... The more I learn how similar our pasts are, the more I believe we were destined to journey together.

Path Companion (Miqo'te): Ever since the gods reached down from the boundless heavens and laid their hands upon my soul, not a day has gone by that I haven't asked myself, why me and not someone else?

Path Companion (Miqo'te): But then, I remembered they were gods, and gods are all-knowing. If they believe I can wield this power in a just and goodly fashion, who am I to question their divine judgment? Now, if they had only thought it pertinent to tell me how I am to wield this power... But then again, if they did not work in mysterious ways, they wouldn't be gods now, would they?

Path Companion (Miqo'te): In short─let's not worry ourselves about it. We've been chosen. Why fight it?

Path Companion (Miqo'te): ...A very wise choice. I'm sure we're going to have a lot of fun together. In fact, I guarantee it.

Path Companion (Miqo'te): Very well. I shall give you some time alone to ponder your decision. If you are feeling lost, you can always try the pearl given to you by Lady Tataru, but I might be...indisposed.

Path Companion (Miqo'te): But you need not fret, for as they say, the time we spend apart will only make the time we spend together that much more special.

Path Companion - Midlander Female[edit]

Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Tataru: Welcome back, Pathbound <Player Name>. Your companion should be arriving shortly.

???: Hullo, everyone! So, which lucky soul has been granted the privilege of traveling with me to the ends of the realm and beyond?

Tataru: Allow me to introduce you to <Full Player Name>─an adventurer, a lately woken walker of the Path, and your new companion.

???: You're my new partner? Hmmm... I was expecting someone a little more masculine... Still, if you chose me, you can't be all that bad!

* * *

???: As for me...well, I have many names, and I have none. People call me what pleases them, and I find that by allowing it, things go much more smoothly. Feel free to call me what you will.

???: Interesting... Not what I would have chosen, but...

Path Companion (Midlander): Tiny Tataru, my dear─would you be so kind as to write my brand-new name down in your register?

Path Companion (Midlander): Now, were you going to remain a mystery, or were you going to let me know a little about yourself and this "adventuring" you claim to be proficient in?

Path Companion (Midlander): I must say, it seems you lead quite an exhilarating life. I would love to hear more, but the day's excitement has left me famished! I know! We can visit this Adventurer's Guild of yours and you can treat me to a dodo omelette.

Path Companion (Midlander): Ah, but first I'm going to return to my room at the Hourglass and make myself more presentable. I shall meet you at the guild when I have finished. And do not forget the omelette!

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Momodi: Are you waiting for someone? A handsome suitor, perhaps? Ohohoho! Then may I suggest our finest table? Which one is our finest, you ask? Why, all of them are!

Path Companion (Midlander): A starshower! How romantic! My awakening occurred when I fell from a chocobo coach─which is not to say I didn't see a few stars myself! Ah hah hah hah!

Path Companion (Midlander): But ever since then, I have been thinking...what exactly is this gift I was granted, and why me? Of all the people in the world─of all the knights and adventurers and kings and heroes─why me? Why a maiden of but eight and ten...alright, one and twenty......alright, four and twenty?

Path Companion (Midlander): Anyway...I still do not know. But I swear on my maidenhood...alright, I swear on my father's name that I mean to find out. That is why I came to Lady Minfilia. That is why I walk the Path. Perhaps you can help, as well, though you seem even more lost than I.

Path Companion (Midlander): Well, lost or not, I'd be delighted if you'd join me...assuming you can keep up!

Path Companion (Midlander): Wonderful!

Path Companion (Midlander): I assume that you will want to continue adventuring while we wait for instructions from Lady Minfilia, and that is fine, but please do make sure to call me on the aether when something arises. You can use the pearl the Path gave you.

Path Companion (Midlander): It has been a pleasure, <Player Name>. I look forward to seeing you again soon!

Path Companion - Elezen Female[edit]

Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Tataru: Welcome back, Pathbound <Player Name>. Your companion should be arriving shortly.

???: I must apologize for my lateness. I hope I've not kept my new companion waiting overlong.

Tataru: Allow me to introduce you to <Player Name> ─an adventurer, a lately woken walker of the Path, and your new companion.

???: It is an honor to finally make your acquaintance.

???: You must forgive me, but I cannot tell you my true name. I come from a small clan, and we are very protective of our past. Please, do not take offense─I ask but this one secret. To prove I bear you no ill will, you may call me whatever you wish.

???: If it pleases my lord.

Path Companion (Elezen): Lady Tataru, if you would be so kind as to update your records accordingly.

Path Companion (Elezen): Ah, but where to begin? Other than your name, I find I know little about you. Would it be an affront if I asked your trade?

Path Companion (Elezen): Adventuring! Ah, it all sounds so exciting! I should like very much to hear more about your many quests─assuming you find the subject as interesting as I do. Perhaps we might continue our conversation at the Quicksand? Why, just going there would be an adventure for me!

Path Companion (Elezen): Oh, but look at these rags. I would not have the people of Ul'dah think that you associate with uncivilized rabble. If you would grant me your leave, I shall return to my room at the Hourglass and make myself more presentable. We can then meet at the guild.

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Momodi: Are you waiting for someone? A comely maiden, perhaps? Ohohoho! Then may I suggest our finest table? Which one is our finest, you ask? Why, all of them are!

Path Companion (Elezen): This is amazing, <Player Name>! I too was witness to a starshower! For so long, I thought I was alone...but to hear your story, and how it echoes my own... Thank you so much for sharing it with me.

Path Companion (Elezen): I have spent many a night asking myself why it was me who was chosen, and not someone else; someone more deserving; someone more able.

Path Companion (Elezen): And I still do not have an answer. Yet I intend to find one, if it takes me the rest of my life. I believe the Path of the Twelve can lead me to that answer, but I do not know if I can bear the road alone.

Path Companion (Elezen): I would be honored if you'd agree to accompany me.

Path Companion (Elezen): Thank you...

Path Companion (Elezen): As much as I would like to accompany you on all of your travels, there are still many things which I feel I must discover on my own. However, we both walk the same Path, and I would hope that if you ever have need of me, you will call─just as I hope you would permit me to do the same, should I ever have need of you.

Path Companion (Elezen): I thank you again, <Player Name>. I look forward to walking the Path together.

Path Companion - Elezen Male[edit]

Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Tataru: Welcome back, Pathbound <Player Name>. Your companion should be arriving shortly.

Path Companion (Elezen): Well, where is she?

Tataru: Allow me to introduce you to Pathbound <Player Name> - an adventurer, a lately woken walker of the Path, and your new companion.

Path Companion (Elezen): This one? Hmph. You shall have to do.

Path Companion (Elezen): My name is my own. Call me what you will, if you must call me anything at all.

Path Companion (Elezen): Hmph.

Path Companion (Elezen): You heard her. Scribble it down in those logs of your if you must.

Path Companion (Elezen): Now... tell me who you are and what compelled you to choose me.

Path Companion (Elezen): An adventurer... I thought as much. Would you be more at ease if we were to speak at a venue more accustomed to catering to your kind? The Quicksand, perhaps?

Path Companion (Elezen): Very well. I have several matters I must attend to first. You may wait for me there in the main hall.

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Momodi: Are you waiting for someone? A handsome suitor, perhaps? Ohohoho! Then may I suggest our finest table? Which one is our finest, you ask? Why, all of them are!

Path Companion (Elezen): A starshower... Perhaps we have more in common than I first assumed.

Path Companion (Elezen): I have spent many a night ruminating on this “gift.” What would the Twelve have me do with such power?

Path Companion (Elezen): I still do not know, but I mean to find out─alone if necessary, though you are welcome to join me.

Path Companion (Elezen): What say you?

Path Companion (Elezen): Very well.

Path Companion (Elezen): I will not have you presume that we are to spend every waking moment together. I am quite sure you have existing duties, and you may be certain that I do. However, as your companion on the Path, I ask that if you come across anything of import, you contact me. You may use the linkpearl given to you by Lady Tataru.

Path Companion (Elezen): And with that, I bid you farewell, <Player Name>.

Path Companion - Highlander Male[edit]

Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Tataru: Welcome back, Pathbound <Player Name>. Your companion should be arriving shortly.

???: This had better be good. I don't take kindly to bein' interrupted while I'm drinkin'.

Tataru: Allow me to introduce you to <Player Name> ─an adventurer, a lately woken walker of the Path, and your new companion.

???: I left a tall flagon of sweet red and a ripe, young wench for this? You'd better be worth it, 'venturer.

???:My name's─ No, you ain't getting my true name. Just as I didn't get yours, <Player Name>. Call me whatever you bloody like.

???: That'll do.

Path Companion (Highlander): You heard the wench. Add it to your books if you like. It's no hair off my arse if you don't.

Path Companion (Highlander): Now. What is it you like to tell yourself you do?

Path Companion (Highlander): An adventurer? Ha! You and every other sod in the realm. Well then, how about this, Missus Adventurer? We can go over to that guild of yours and you can buy me a cup of sweet red to make up for the one you dragged me away from earlier. As for the wench? Well, we can talk about that, too.

Path Companion (Highlander): But first, I've got to pay someone a visit─poor sod. I'll meet you at the Quicksand in a bell.

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Momodi: Are you waiting for someone? A handsome suitor, perhaps? Ohohoho! Then may I suggest our finest table? Which one is our finest, you ask? Why, all of them are!

Path Companion (Highlander): So you was touched by the Twelve as well, eh? Bowels emptied the first time you went back, right? No? Well...neither did mine, so we'll say no more about it.

Path Companion (Highlander): But I ask you this, 'venturer: after all those trips into the past, did you ever stop to wonder why it was you who was given this gift? Why not a priestly from Ishgard? Why not a champion from the Coliseum? Well, I've been doing naught but think, and I reckon I might've worked out why.

Path Companion (Highlander): Because the gods knew I'd have the stones to go out and use it, not hide it away in a cellar. 'Course, if I'm right, they must've seen the same in you─which tells me you ain't all bad.

Path Companion (Highlander) So, then, how about we heed the call? We'll walk the realm as the right and left arm of the Twelve, and when we finally call it a day, they'll need to build an eighth hell to hold all the corpses we've sent them.

Path Companion (Highlander): Hah hah hah!

Path Companion (Highlander): This calls for a celebration! I think I'll seek out that wench I was with earlier. If you need me, you can try that linkpearl Lady Tataru gave you. But don't be surprised if I'm busy.

Path Companion (Highlander): And with that, I bid you farewell! Until next time, Leilah Moonflower! Keep your wits sharp, and your blades sharper. Something tells me we'll soon be needing both.

Path Companion - Lalafell Male[edit]

Fade to White - Merchant Wards
Tataru: Welcome back, Pathbound <Player Name>. Your companion should be arriving shortly.

???: Am I late? I am late, aren't I? Oh, this is terrible! We've yet to meet and my Path companion is sure to despise me already.

Tataru: Allow me to introduce you to <Player Name>─an adventurer, a lately woken walker of the Path, and your new companion.

???: Gods! I'm so sorry I'm late! Please don't hate me! You will forgive me, won't you?

???: I s-s-suppose that you'll now want me to tell you my name...
Oh, if only I could! But ever since the starshower...I cannot seem to remember! What is a man without a name!? A nameless man, he is. Hardly a man at all! But wait! Might you be generous enough to give me a name? Any name will suffice! A nameless excuse for a man has no right to be picky!

???: A fine name! More than fine. Too fine for one as unworthy as I.

Path Companion (Lalafell): I do not mean to impose, but might I humbly ask the Lady Tataru to pen my new name in her register? Oh, but not too largely. I am not deserving of even a fraction of that parchment. Why, even a simple dot will suffice. In the corner. Of the last page. The back of the last page, if possible. There.

Path Companion (Lalafell): Ah...er... I...uh...
So...ah, would I be overstepping my bounds if I were to ask...er...what it is you do when...er...not walking the Path? Ah, that is, only if you wish to tell me. If not, that is perfectly acceptable. Perfectly, yes.

Path Companion (Lalafell): Adventuring! Oh, how I longed to be an adventurer─but my dear mother would not allow it! Too dangerous, she said! Too perilous, she said. And so I trained alone for I don't know how long, dreaming all the while that one day an adventurer would come along and─ Wait...you are an adventurer. M-Might you...be willing to take me to the Adventurers' Guild?

Path Companion (Lalafell): Really!? Truly!? Really and truly!? Oh, if my mother were here now, she would be absolutely furious! I feel so wicked!
Ah! I apologize. I did not mean to─ I-I-I love my dear mother, I do. Why, perhaps I should go home and see how she is before our...er...meeting. Yes. I will do that, and then meet you at the guild, <Player Name>.

Fade to White - The Quicksand
Momodi: Are you waiting for someone? A comely maiden/handsome suitor, perhaps? Ohohoho! Then may I suggest our finest table? Which one is our finest, you ask? Why, all of them are!

Path Companion (Lalafell): Oh my... Oh my, oh my. Your story of the starshower─it sounds eerily like mine! But what you did after...? Battles with frenzied beasts! Escorting damsels in distress! Adventures! All I did was hide in my chamber...

Path Companion (Lalafell): But there, I had much time to think─think about why the gods chose me. Tiny, craven, insignificant me. They must have had some purpose...unless it was simply a mistake... But gods do not make mistakes, do they?

Path Companion (Lalafell): Alone, I don't think I'll ever find an answer, b-b-but with you at my side, I might─

Path Companion (Lalafell) Ah, but only if you'd have me! I wouldn't get in the way, I promise you. I don't eat much, and as you can see, I don't take up much space! Please!

Path Companion (Lalafell): Oh, I knew he/she would say no... Why would anyone want to─ Wait... He/she said yes. You said yes! Yes! He/she said yes! Did you hear that, Mother!? I'm going on an adventure!

Path Companion (Lalafell): Ah, I apologize. I never meant to imply that I would be accompanying you on all your adventures. I would never think of imposing such a burden on such a busy man/woman as yourself. Never! But if the Lady Minfilia were to approach you with a task for the Path that I might be able to assist you wiiith...

Path Companion (Lalafell): Ah, but I've said enough. More than enough! Far, far too much! I-I shall go home now. Mother will want to hear all about it... Ulp!
