Warrior of Light (Player)

The Warrior of Light is the player's created character. Known by many names and titles, Warrior of Light is perhaps the most prominent name by which the character is known throughout the story.

History[edit]

Aside from being a recurring title throughout the Final Fantasy series, the name gets its origin from an incident at the end of the Battle of Carteneau. Many adventurers had come to the aid of Louisoix, but he had sent them away to safety in a flash of blinding light. The people of Eorzea could not remember the names or faces of those adventurers, only the sight of them being outlined in light. And so they came to be known as the Warriors of Light, heroes of Eorzea.

In the Seventh Astral Era, the player character takes the central role of the story as an up and coming adventurer that is newly joining the Adventurer's Guild. If a person played during the original version of Final Fantasy XIV (prior to A Realm Reborn) and transferred their data, the protagonist will instead be one of the veteran adventurers who disappeared during the Battle of Carteneau. In either case, the player will eventually come to be known as the Warrior of Light as a reference to those heroes who disappeared five years past.

Promotional Material[edit]

Many official artwork and pre-rendered trailers feature a male Midlander Hyur in the role of the Warrior of Light. In many cases, he acts as the face of Final Fantasy XIV. While he has no official name, he was referred to as Meteor Survivor in recordings of 1.x event scenes that were included with the collector's edition of A Realm Reborn. He is known by other names amongst the fandom, including CG Midlander (for his appearance in CG cutscenes), Derplander (on account of his facial expression during the 1.x trailer), or simply Hyur Midlander.

Over the course of the game's lifetime, his appearance has changed progressively with the release of each expansion. He is typically featured as the job that is tied to the expansion, such as Dragoon for Heavensward or Dark Knight for Shadowbringers.
