Dragons are a fearsome and highly variable beast tribe that includes Spoken members. Dragonkind came to Eorzea with Midgardsormr, who carried the eggs of the First Brood with him. These seven dragons went on to birth a massive number of dragons in kind.

The dragons of the Dravanian Horde are the perennial enemies of Ishgard and have fought them in the Dragonsong War for a millennium.

During the Third Astral Era, the dragons of Meracydia went to war with the Allagan Empire. Eventually, this cost the life of their brood-father, Bahamut. The brood-mother, Tiamat, summoned Bahamut as a Primal to fight Allag, but this specter was defeated by the Allagan monstrosity Omega and sealed in Dalamud, an artificial satellite made to orbit Hydaelyn's greater moon.

Early in the Sixth Astral Era, the dragons of Dravania made peace with the Elezen settled around Abalathia's Spine with the aid of Shiva. This accord fell apart with the betrayal of King Thordan and his Knights Twelve, who killed the great wyrm Ratatoskr and took her eyes for their own.

The great wyrm Nidhogg retaliated for his sister's murder, killing Thordan and several knights but losing his eyes to Haldrath, Thordan's son who used Nidhogg's eye to become the first Azure Dragoon. The remaining knights formed the city-state of Ishgard, and a millennium of conflict ensued between the men of the Holy See and the dragons of the Dravanian Horde.
