Main Command 36 Icon.png
In general, there is a fourfold classification of adventurers based on the disciplinary paths to which they devote themselves. Battle classes are either a Disciple of War, masters of arms who live for the call of combat, or a Disciple of Magic, erudite researchers of all things esoteric. Non-combat classes can be either a Disciple of the Land, gatherers of material resources and students of the natural order, or a Disciple of the Hand, crafters who invest their creative ingenuity in synthesis and industry.

By making use of what is called the Armoury system, players may opt to specialize in one discipline, excelling in a single skill, or they may take a more general approach,

"Every soul must needs have a code, a purpose, to guide them. Else chaos would consume us all."
- The Determination of Being, Guillaurmand de Padellaint

Combat Roles

Disciples of War
"The advancement of a nation may be gauged by its ability to craft weapons, but its future depends on its ability to craft wars."
- from Leading the Van, by master tactician Owyne Cosserand
Followers of this discipline devote themselves to the mastery of weapons and the wars waged with them. Through rigorous physical training, they hone their minds and bodies into instruments of combat, ever ready to make a decisive contribution to the cycle of conflict which plagues Eorzea.

Disciples of Magic
"Aether knows neither sacred nor profane, yet resides in all creation. Embrace it, and a timeless power will be yours."
- celebrated soothsayer and sage, Gota Jaab

The path of magic beckons to those with a restless desire to study and command sorcery in all its forms. Its adherents use artifacts and relics to call upon and channel forces within themselves and the aether around them, weaving their destructive and restorative spells in the service of Eorzea.

The 5 Roles
Historically, combat classes would be classified as either a Disciples of War or a Disciples of Magic. With the introduction of Stormblood, each job/class is more accurately assigned one of 5 roles: tank, healer, melee DPS, physical ranged DPS, magic ranged DPS.

Characters can take on a number of different professions, or classes. Changing classes or jobs is as simple as switching the weapon or tool equipped in the character's main hand. Classes all start at level 1 and have connected to them associated jobs which can be unlocked at level 30 and which confer additional skills and abilities.

Jobs are either (i) unlocked at level 30 via classes; (ii) unlocked with an expansion pack and at varying starting levels. Jobs are more advanced than their affiliated classes (where applicable), and give characters access to additional and exclusive skills and actions.

- esteemed naturalist Pilfa Dalfa, in his cups

These harvesters of nature's bounty utilize an array of tools in their work with all forms of plants and minerals. Their trade encompasses knowledge of all of Hydaelyn's natural resources, be it in a cultivated garden or the great outdoors.
