- Biography
- Rostnsthal was once better known as Commodore Sthalmann Stalmannsyn, the commodore of Limsa Lominsa's Knights of the Barracuda. At the peak of his career, Sthalmann was responsible for ordering a self-serving and reckless operation that aimed to oust the current Admiral using the treasures of the fabled Seal Rock—a mission that succeeded in uncovering a ritual object for summoning primals.
But the operation soon went awry. With many of his subordinates slaughtered, and the artifact taken, Sthalmann's reputation was shattered beyond all repair. Stripped of his rank, he took up the name "Rostnsthal," (meaning "rusty steel" in the old Roegadyn tongue) and recruited his own crew of pirates in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to steal back the lost relic. The years following this failure were spent wallowing in cheap grog and misery, until an unexpected offer from distant Ishgard saw him accept the post of a marksmanship instructor.
Full History
- For events prior to 1562, see Sthalmann's page.
Rostnsthal was first encountered aboard Hob's ship en route to Limsa Lominsa. After hearing the melody of a disembodied songstress, Rostnsthal was the only person in the salon who didn't outwardly mock the player's inquiries. Hob's ship had sailed into a rough storm on the Rhotano Sea, causing Rostnsthal drink himself into brooding silence to dull the memories of the night he witnessed the sea serpent ten ears earlier. This intense memory resonates with the player's newly-received blessing, the Echo, causing them to unknowingly witness their first vision of the past.
Notes: * Rostnsthal is 55 years old.
- The Roegadyn language is based on various Germanic influences. Rostnsthal's name is made from the German words "rost" (rust) and "stahl" (steel). This is a reference to his previous name, Sthalmann, which means "steel man," and on occasion NPCs are known to refer to him offhandedly as "Rusty Steel."
